NEW YORK: Dr. Akram, Senior Vice President and Chairman, Media and Communications, Pakistan Muslim League USA said that the European Union Election Observation Mission (EUEOM) report have confirmed the truth which was known to 160 million people of Pakistan about the February 18 elections. He was talking to the media about the recently released report of the EUEOM about 2008 elections in Pakistan.
Dr. Akram said Musharraf government committed serious violations of the election process by appointing a handpicked Chief Election Commissioner and other members of the EC without consultation with other political parties and members of the civil society, borrowing Mr. Soomro from the Senate as a caretaker Prime Minister, installing his cronies as Federal and Provincial ministers, massive transfer of civil servants and giving free hand to MQM and Q league for massive rigging. He said that the elections were held in a very difficult security environment, in which the threat of violence and an atmosphere of fear prevailed so that the people could not come out to vote. The entire election process was therefore, neither fair nor transparent. Ms. Benazir Bhutto was killed in a broad day light by the government agencies to deprive Peoples Party and the people of Pakistan from an able leadership, while Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif were deprived to contest elections for the same reason. The Q league and MQM candidates were given free hand to use government machinery and funds for election campaign and intimidation. He said despite all rigging and fraud people rejected dictatorship and elected democratic parties in an overwhelming majority. Musharraf must accept the verdict of 160 million people and resign immediately so that the new government could function freely to solve people’s problems, he said.
