CAIR Is Hosting “Islamophobia” Discussion Today in New York

NEW YORK: Today, the New York chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-NY) is hosting a panel discussion entitled ‘Islamophobia: Institutionalized Racism?’ The event is part of a series of discussions scheduled around the nation, addressing the issue of "Islamophobia," or fear and hatred of Islam and Muslims.

The panel discussion will be held at Islamic Center, at New York University , 238 Thompson Street , New York , NY 10012   from 2 to 5 pm.

 

The New York event will seek to explain the historical context of Islamophobia and provide resources for gaining a better understanding of the negative impact anti-Muslim bigotry has on individuals and organizations throughout the United States .

"Given the lamentable state of our nation's international image, it is imperative that American Muslims analyze the situation and advocate solutions that will help remove the perception that we, as a nation, are at war with the faith of Islam," said CAIR Board Chairman Parvez Ahmed, who is one of the panelists.

The moderator of the Panel Discussion will be Rev. James J. Gardiner:  Rev. James J. Gardiner with the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement is the Director of Graymoor Spiritual Life Center in Garrison , NY . He is co-editor with J. Deotis Roberts of Quest for a Black Theology. He also serves as a chair on the Tri-State Catholic Committee on Radio and Television.

*Dr. Parvez Ahmed: Dr. Parvez Ahmed is national board chair of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). He is an associate professor of finance at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville . He also serves as a board member for OneJax, formerly the National Conference on Community and Justice (NCCJ).

*Dr. Lawrence Davidson: Dr. Lawrence Davidson is professor of Middle East history at West Chester University in West Chester , Penn. He is author of " America 's Palestine : Popular and Official Perceptions from Balfour to Israeli Statehood," "Islamic Fundamentalism" and co-author with Arthur Goldschmidt of "A Concise History of the Middle East ."

 

*Dr. Lucinda Mosher: Dr. Lucinda Mosher is a Christian ethicist who works as a consultant, author, and educator on inter-religious matters. Her clients include Trinity Institute, Auburn Theological Seminary’s Center for Multifaith Education, and Columbia University ’s Middle East Institute. She is the author of Faith in the Neighborhood (a Seabury Books series on inter-religious understanding.)
