KOLKATA (India): The West Bengal State Assembly yesterday passed The Aliah University Bill 2007 amidst the walk-out by Opposition members. The Bill has upgraded Calcutta Madrasah College (originally Madrasah Aaliah) into Aaliah University. Both Mr Partha Chatterjee, leader of the Opposition, and Mr Sudip Bandopadhyay of the Congress wanted to know that why the government had dropped the name “Madrasah” though they were actually upgrading the Calcutta Madrasah College to a University.
