IT is with utmost grief for us that a great 'Alim and Muhaddith of our time, Hazrat Moulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri (r.a.) - son of the great luminary, Moulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri (r.a.), departed this temporary abode at around on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in India. He was 78.

He was considered an authority on tafseer, Sharia and Hadith. He has written several books on ‘Hadith,’ ‘fiqh’ and Islamic law. He also set up an Islamic Institute, Jamia Anwar, in memory of his father. He was also a best orator. Maulana Anzar Shah Kashmiri was suffering from ailment in the heart and kidney for some years and was under treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi. He was laid to rest in Deoband in the presence of thousands of mourners. He is survived with wife, six daughters and a son.

Born in Doodiwan, a small village in the Lolab valley of north Kashmir on 26 January 1929, he served as Dean of Islamic jurisprudence in the famed Darul Uloom Deoband.

Moulana Anzar Shah was tutored by his illustrious father Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri, Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madni and Qari Mohammad Taiyyab, who was the longest serving Chancellor of the Darul Uloom, Deoband. After completing his studies, he joined the 135-year-old Islamic university and rose to the rank of Dean. He had been teaching Quran and Hadith for the last 55 years.

Several Muslim organizations have expressed condolences at his demise. They include All India Muslim Personal Law Board, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, Imarat Shariah (Bihar, Jharkhand & Orissa), and Hurriyat Conference, Kashmir (Both Factions).
