ISLAMABAD: Major opposition alliance on Thursday decided in principle to boycott the January 8th parliamentary elections, chief of the alliance said.
The All Parties Democratic Alliance (APDM) decided that the alliance leaders will approach former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and chief of Jamiat ulema-e-Islam Maulana Fazal ur Rehman to convince them to boycott the elections.
The APDM leaders met in Lahore and decided t stay away from the elections as they believe that the elections would not be transparent under President Musharraf, the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said.
Nawaz Sharif, who chaired the meeting, told a news conference that the APDM also rejected General Musharraf’s televised address in which he announced to lift emergency on December 16.
He said that the alliance has decided to form two committees to meet Benazir Bhutto and Maulana Fazal ur Rehman to ask them to join the other parties in the boycott.
The APDM demanded restoration of the Chief Justice and all other judges who have been sacked by President Musharraf on November 3rd, when he imposed emergency in the country.
APDM is composed of some 30 parties including the major parties like Muslim League-N of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Jamaat-e-Islami. Most of the nationalist groups in Sindh and Balochistan are also part of the APDM.
Benazir Bhutto and Maulana Fazal ur Rehman have already decided to take part in the elections, besides the Muslim League-Q and its former coalition partners.
