FOLLOWING Canada's request for more NATO involvement in Afghanistan, Poland vows to send 400 more troops and two choppers to the country.
In a speech on Monday morning in Ottawa, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said his country is adding 400 troops to the 1,200 it already has fighting in the south and east of Afghanistan and also giving 2 helicopters for Canada's immediate need.
A report by former Canadian deputy prime minister John Manley last month urged Ottawa to secure pledges from its allies for at least 1,000 more troops and equipment, including helicopters and drones, before considering extending its combat mission in Afghanistan beyond its current mandate of February 2009.
Canada deployed 2,500 troops in Afghanistan's volatile southern Kandahar province as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force.
Since 2002, 78 Canadian soldiers and a senior diplomat have died in roadside bombings and in clashes with insurgents.
