The Bush administration tries to keep up its appearance over nuclear deal with India although many experts claim that the agreement is dead.

"We do hope that India will decide to move forward with this agreement and we would like to see it completed in 2008. This is an issue on which we continue to have conversations with Indian government officials," US State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters.

White House spokesman Tony Fratto also strongly rejected the view of many experts that the deal is all but dead." The president is willing, and very understanding that the Indians may need more time for this. But no, it's not dead," he said.

The Indian government has officially informed the US that it will not take the next step on the controversial nuclear deal, described by the Bush administration as the "single most important initiative in the 60 years of our relationship".

Although India's Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had personally backed the deal, the government was unable to convince communist allies the agreement was in the country's interest.

The communists' argue that India's foreign policy is becoming subservient to the US, and that Washington is steadily molding the country's economy. The nuclear deal, they say, tightens America's hold on India.
