DEMOCRATIC White House hopeful Barack Obama says the US policy of not talking with Iran is not working and it is time to change course. "My approach to Iran will be based upon aggressive diplomacy," Obama told a group of Jewish leaders in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
"What it means is that we come to the table with a very clear set of objectives and a very clear set of demands -- that Iran ceases from pursuing nuclear weapons, that it stops funding Hezbollah and Hamas, that it ends its noxious statements about Israel and the threats directed towards Israel," he claimed.
He also said that he would keep all military options on the table should Iran continue its nuclear activity.
Sen. Obama also criticized former President Jimmy Carter for meeting with leaders of Hamas.
"Hamas is not a state. Hamas is a terrorist organization," he said.
"That's why I have a fundamental difference with President Carter and disagree with his decision to meet with Hamas.”
"We must not negotiate with a terrorist group intent on Israel's destruction. We should only sit down with Hamas if they renounce terrorism, recognize Israel's right to exist and abide by past agreements," noted the Illinois senator.
While Obama's rival Hillary Clinton has adopted a more pro-Israeli policy, the Illinois senator has been cautious not to provoke negative reactions through blind support for Israel.
“Nobody is suffering more than the Palestinian people,” Obama had earlier said.
