SEASON two of the smash hit show Prince of Poets aired live on Abu Dhabi TV Friday night with the first seven poets of the competition taking the stage drawing a mix of audience applauses and judges’ criticism for their performances. Airing live from Al Raha Beach Theatre in Abu Dhabi over the course of ten weeks, the classical poetry competition drew a crowd of supporters for the seven contestants who hail from all ends of the Arab world.

For the next five weeks, seven different poets will compete to get through to the second round but only three each week get through. Taking to the stage in the much anticipated second season of the show were Adi Weld Adab from Mauritania, Khalidiyah Gaballah from Algeria, Sameh Kaawash from Palestine, Abdelnasser Al Johari from Egypt, Emad Gabar from Iraq, Mohammed Al Eiyaf Al Aamoush from Jordan and Moaber Al Nahari from Saudi Arabia.

Contestants battled it out with poems on themes of exile, praise, strength and hope penetrating the air with heavy meanings only to receive heavy criticisms from the five judges. In a bid to dig up only the best out of the contestants, Judges Abdel Malek Murtad, Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Dr. Salah Fadhl, Naif Rushdan and Ahmed Khrais, doled out harsh remarks to the poets but it wasn’t all bad news with female contestant, Khalidiya, escaping the biting tongue of the judges. Khalidiya’s poem focusing on strength and solidarity despite the harshness of the world impressed the judges also impressing the judges was Mohammed Al Aamoush whose poem praised the UAE and HE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed for his ability to unify Arabs through poetry. However, it was Khalidiya who made it through to the second round with 41% of the judges votes and Mohammed trailing her with 40%.

One week of SMS voting will now follow to choose who else from Friday night’s show will succeed to the second round, who will be announced at the beginning of next week’s show. Audience’s votes count for 50% and will be added to the judge’s percentages to determine who will go through to the second round.
